Lakeville Swamp, Nature sanctuary in Oakland County, Michigan, US.
Lakeville Swamp is a protected wetland covering approximately 76 acres, combining white cedar swamps, prairie wetlands, wet meadows, and oak barrens in one area. The landscape features streams and flat sections with varying soil types that create a complex patchwork of different habitats.
The protected area was established in 1961 by the Michigan Nature Association as one of the state's early conservation projects. This early work set a foundation for systematic protection of the region's wetlands.
The wetland holds plant species that thrive in moist conditions and draws people interested in exploring how these ecosystems function. Visitors can walk through the different habitats to understand the ecological role these areas play in the region.
Access to the site begins from Rochester Road, and visitors should move carefully across uneven ground and wet areas. Comfortable shoes and weather-appropriate clothing are recommended to explore the sanctuary safely and comfortably.
The area is crossed by several branches of Stony Creek that wind through the valley. These water channels play an important role in draining and distributing nutrients throughout the wetland system.
