Leland Castle

Leland Castle is a stone mansion in New Rochelle featuring a tall square tower on the southeast corner and hexagonal and round towers at opposite corners. The residence contains sixty rooms arranged across multiple levels with different architectural styles.

Simeon Leland, a New York City hotel owner, commissioned this residence between 1855 and 1859 with architect William Thomas Beers. The construction reflected the wealth and ambitions of the era in the region.

The art gallery inside displays contemporary works in rooms decorated with Renaissance elements and original fireplaces. Visitors experience how modern art inhabits the historic spaces of the mansion.

The main entrance door is made of black walnut with lion head designs, framed by Gothic tracery and detailed stone carvings. This elaborate craftsmanship shows the care invested in every detail of the structure.
