Malvern Hill, Historic battlefield site in Henrico County, Virginia, US
Malvern Hill is a Civil War battlefield in Henrico County, Virginia, situated on elevated ground with earthworks and artillery positions that remain visible. The site includes walking paths and interpretive signs placed throughout the property.
The location served as a campsite for French forces and as a militia position in earlier conflicts before becoming a major battleground in 1862. The engagement that year became a turning point in the military campaign of that summer.
Visitors experience this site as a place where three different conflicts left their mark on the land over time. The preserved positions tell the story of how different soldiers and armies moved across the same ground.
The grounds are easily walkable and the elevated position provides good views across the surrounding area. Sturdy footwear is recommended since the terrain includes uneven surfaces and slopes.
The original manor house was built with a brick chimney salvaged from an earlier wooden structure, showing how builders reused older materials. This chimney remained visible to visitors until recent restoration work began.
