Monroe State Forest, Protected forest area in Massachusetts, United States.

Monroe State Forest is a protected area covering roughly 3,750 acres with mountainous terrain featuring steep valleys, deciduous woodlands, and wetland habitats. The property contains mixed forest types and diverse vegetation distributed across the landscape.

This protected area was established in 1924 as part of a broader effort to preserve forest lands. During the 1930s, workers from the Civilian Conservation Corps added infrastructure to the property through construction projects.

The forest carries traces of 19th-century farming life through stone walls and cellar holes scattered throughout the property. These remains offer a quiet connection to the agricultural past that shaped the land.

The forest is accessible by car with free parking available at the Dunbar Brook Trailhead. Multiple trails accommodate hikers, horseback riders, and cross-country skiers depending on seasonal conditions.

The forest preserves roughly 273 acres of old-growth forest with eastern hemlock, red spruce, and hardwood species in their natural state. These untouched woodlands offer a view of how the ecosystem functions without human management.
