New Prospect Church, church building in Virginia, United States of America
New Prospect Church is a small wooden building with Greek Revival features located near Bedford in southwestern Virginia. It measures about 34 feet (10 meters) wide and 45 feet (14 meters) long, with a rectangular form, steep gabled roof, and white exterior, all resting on a stone foundation.
The building was constructed in 1880 when local residents used simple methods and materials to create a place of worship for their mountain community. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2000, ensuring its protection and preservation for future generations.
The church served as a gathering place for the mountain community of Reba from its opening and continues to shape religious and social life in the area today. Families gathered here for worship and community events, creating bonds that connect generations of local people.
The building is private property but clearly visible from the road, particularly from Sheep Creek Road nearby. Visitors should view it from outside and respect the privacy of the property owners.
The interior preserves original details such as hand-crafted wooden pews anchored to the floor and hanging lamps that were converted to electricity in 1948. A working wood stove continues to heat the single room during cold months, showing remarkable continuity over more than one hundred years.
