Phillips Recording, Recording studio in Memphis, United States.
Phillips Recording is a recording studio on Madison Avenue in Memphis, Tennessee, with two floors that contain separate spaces for studio work, promotion, and office use. The two ground-floor studios are equipped with original vintage gear, including a Spectra Sonics console.
Sam Phillips opened this studio in 1960 after his original Sun Studio location became too small for his growing record label. The new Madison Avenue address offered larger and more specialized spaces for production work.
The studios still hold analog gear from the early decades of recorded music, and visitors can look at it up close. The rooms give a tangible sense of how musicians and producers worked at the time.
The studio sits on Madison Avenue and is easy to reach on foot from the central parts of Memphis. Both floors are open to visitors, and natural light helps when looking at the equipment and rooms in detail.
The Spectra Sonics console originally came from Stax Studio B and was moved to this building, creating a direct physical link between two important recording locations in Memphis music history. This makes the console a tangible object connecting two separate chapters of the city's recorded sound.
