Pennsylvania Furnace Mansion

Pennsylvania Furnace Mansion is a Federal-style limestone residence with a front elevation spanning three and a half stories. The building features a formal entrance decorated with a transom and sidelights, characteristic of this architectural approach.

Built in 1834, this L-shaped structure served as the residence of the ironmaster operating the nearby Pennsylvania Furnace. The construction date places it within the early phases of the region's industrial growth and expansion.

The mansion reflects how ironmasters expressed their wealth and status through architecture during the industrial period. Its Federal design was a choice that signaled their importance in the regional economy at that time.

The property sits near Pennsylvania Route 45, south of the Centre County line, making it accessible by road in a rural setting. The site occupies less than an acre, so visitors can view the exterior and grounds in a short visit.

The property retains an original privy structure, a rare survivor from 19th-century domestic practices. This outbuilding's preservation was a key factor in securing the site's listing on the National Register in 1990.
