Sunset Point, Historic estate on Catfish Lake in Eagle River, United States.
Sunset Point is a French Normandy-style estate spanning 11 acres of land overlooking Catfish Lake in Eagle River, Wisconsin. The property includes multiple stone structures arranged across the grounds with views toward the water.
Chicago businessman Mont Tennes purchased the property in 1921 and commissioned architects Rudolph Nedved and Elizabeth Kimball to design it in 1927. The original main house burned during early construction, then was rebuilt that same year using fireproof materials.
From 1951 to 1974, the property served as a retreat and camp center run by the Sisters of Mercy, welcoming visitors seeking rest and spiritual renewal. This religious use shaped how local people viewed and remembered the estate during those decades.
The property remains in private ownership with restricted access to visitors. You should obtain permission in advance before visiting the grounds or taking photographs of the structures.
A fire destroyed the newly built main house shortly after construction began on the site. The remarkable aspect is that it was completely rebuilt that same season using fireproof materials, returning the estate to its intended state.
