Eagle River Stadium
Eagle River Stadium, Indoor ice hockey arena in Eagle River, Wisconsin, United States
Eagle River Stadium is an indoor ice hockey arena in Wisconsin featuring a distinctive wooden roof made from solid timbers arranged in a honeycomb pattern. The facility seats approximately 2,000 people and primarily serves youth hockey teams for training and competition events.
The stadium was built in 1925 by volunteer community members under architect Max Hanisch Sr.'s direction and became Wisconsin's first covered ice hockey arena. This groundbreaking facility demonstrated innovative construction techniques that would influence regional sports buildings for decades.
The Wisconsin Hockey Hall of Fame housed here displays trophies and memorabilia from successful regional teams and athletes. Visitors can trace how local ice hockey became deeply rooted in the community's identity over many generations.
The building is most active during the winter season from November through March with youth tournaments and training events. Visitors should be prepared for icy walkways during cold months and check ahead about events, as the facility mainly hosts team competitions and practice sessions.
The unusual wooden dome was engineered using German building principles originally developed for aircraft hangars, making it exceptionally innovative for its time. This timber construction with honeycomb-arranged beams allowed for a large open space without interior support columns.
