The Spirit of Polonia, Brass and steel sculpture at Milwaukee County Courthouse, US
The Spirit of Polonia is a brass and steel sculpture at the Milwaukee County Courthouse featuring three concentric rings surrounding a central brass sphere. The nine-foot structure sits in a sixteen-foot concrete pool on the south side of the courthouse building.
Edmund Lewandowski created this sculpture in 1969 to mark the fifteenth anniversary of Polanki, the Polish Women's Cultural Club of Milwaukee. The work was erected as a gift to the city honoring that Polish American institution.
The work displays Polish American heritage through its form and serves as a gathering point for Milwaukee's Polish community. Visitors can see here a symbol representing the connection between Poland and America.
The sculpture is located on the south side of the Milwaukee County Courthouse at 901 North 9th Street and is accessible from outside. The surrounding concrete pool makes it easy to view the work from different angles.
The three rings decrease in size as they surround a central brass sphere, representing Earth within cosmic harmony. This geometric arrangement makes the sculpture visually distinct from different viewpoints.
