Tristate Zoological Park, Zoo in Cumberland, Maryland
The Tristate Zoological Park was a wildlife facility spanning 16 acres in Cumberland that housed rescued animals including lions, tigers, primates, birds, and reptiles. The collection represented a diverse range of species cared for by dedicated volunteers.
The park opened in June 2003 after the owner spent 2 years preparing the facility. The project fulfilled a long-held vision of operating a wildlife rescue center.
The facility participated in annual Groundhog Day ceremonies at Cumberland City Hall, where a resident groundhog made spring predictions.
Visitors should be prepared for uneven terrain and open outdoor areas where the animals were displayed. The facility was accessible year-round but required attention to weather conditions and seasonal changes.
A devastating fire in March 2006 destroyed the main building and killed about 100 animals, with only 2 alligators surviving. The event marked the effective end of operations despite the facility not immediately closing.
