West Bluff Historic District
West Bluff Historic District, National Register historic district in Peoria, Illinois.
West Bluff Historic District is a residential area in Peoria containing hundreds of homes built from the late 1800s through early 1900s. The neighborhood displays diverse architectural styles, including Italianate and Prairie designs, spread throughout its tree-lined streets and blocks.
The district grew as a wealthy neighborhood during the late 1800s, attracting successful businessmen and their families to build homes there. It earned recognition on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976 to protect its aging structures and architectural heritage.
The district developed as an affluent residential neighborhood where the wealthy built grand homes that reflected their status. Walking through the streets today shows how families once displayed their prosperity through distinctive architectural choices.
The district is best explored on foot, with walkable streets connecting residential blocks to nearby commercial areas and local attractions. The terrain is relatively flat and accessible, making it easy to wander at your own pace and examine the houses up close.
Frank Lloyd Wright designed two significant homes within this district, including the Francis W. Little House with its distinctive design elements. The Pettingill-Morron House from 1868 displays Second Empire style with tall arched windows and ornate details that set it apart from neighboring residences.
