Williams Bridge, Historic covered footbridge in Lawrence County, Indiana.
Williams Bridge is a covered footbridge that crosses the East Fork of the White River in Lawrence County. Built with a wooden Howe truss design, it offers pedestrians a historic passageway across the waterway.
Joseph J. Daniels built this structure in 1884 as a major engineering feat for 19th-century Indiana transportation. It received recognition on the National Register of Historic Places in 1981 for its importance to American bridge construction methods.
The National Register of Historic Places recognized Williams Bridge in 1981 for its representation of American bridge construction methods and regional development.
The bridge sits southwest of Bedford near State Road 450 and welcomes pedestrians on foot. It has been closed to vehicle traffic since 2010, so visitors can only cross by walking.
It holds the distinction of being Indiana's longest double-span covered bridge, a rare survivor of this particular construction style. Few other examples from that era remain in such condition today.
