Newport State Park

Newport State Park is a protected area in Door County along Lake Michigan's shore, featuring dense forests, wetlands, and a long waterfront. The landscape consists of wooded hills descending to the water, with beaches and rocky shores along the lake's edge.

Wisconsin acquired this land in 1964 to prevent development and protect its natural character. Since its establishment, the area has remained largely unaltered, maintaining its original ecological structure.

The park serves as a place where people can connect with forests and water in their raw state, far from development. Walking through the trails, visitors experience how the land looks when left to grow on its own.

The park requires a vehicle admission fee paid upon arrival, and visitors can explore on hiking trails or stay at designated camping spots. Plan several hours to walk the landscape and bring water and food, as facilities are limited throughout the area.

The land holds official certification as a Dark Sky Park, meaning artificial light is kept minimal so stars and planets appear clearly at night. This designation makes it one of the few places in the region where the night sky can be viewed without light interference.
