Baileys Harbor Light

Baileys Harbor Light stands on an island at the southeast side of the harbor and features an unusual lantern room with a cage-like structure. The stone building rises from the water, making its isolated location still visible today.

The federal government commissioned Alanson Sweet to build this lighthouse, which began operating in 1853 at the start of the navigation season. Its operation ended in 1869 when a new range light system replaced it due to repeated ship groundings.

This lighthouse represents the maritime heritage of Door County and shows how essential these structures were for navigation along Lake Michigan. The building connects visitors to the region's early days of shipping and water travel.

The lighthouse sits on private property, but visitors can view it from downtown Baileys Harbor parks or take kayak tours for a water-based perspective. Getting closer to the building requires arranging access in advance.

The lantern room has an unusual cage-like structure that sets it apart from typical lighthouse designs. This distinctive construction draws attention from lighthouse enthusiasts who study regional variations.
