Wheeler Hill Historic District

The Wheeler Hill Historic District spans a large area with winding roads lined by stone walls and mature trees, offering views toward the Hudson River. The district contains 49 buildings dating between 1740 and 1940, including six large estates and two commercial structures from the eighteenth century.

The buildings in the district were constructed over a span of two centuries, from the earliest structures in the 1740s through the final additions around 1940. This long building history shows how the area developed from an early settlement into an established residential community along the Hudson River.

The residential buildings in this district showcase architectural styles from Federal to Colonial Revival, reflecting the preferences of different generations who settled here. Walking through the area, you notice how the design choices differ from house to house along the winding roads.

Two properties in the district, Carnwath and Obercreek, are open to visitors for exploration. Obercreek hosts an organic market on weekends, which adds a local activity element to a visit to the area.

Edge Hill, built in 1840, is the only example of Greek Revival architecture in the district and stands out with its fluted Doric columns and full pediment. This house offers a rare example of this specific architectural style found in the area.
