Lord & Taylor Building, Italian Renaissance Revival department store in Midtown Manhattan, United States.
The Lord & Taylor Building is an Italian Renaissance Revival-style department store in Midtown Manhattan at the corner of Fifth Avenue and 38th Street. The eleven-story limestone and gray brick structure is topped with a copper cornice and features a distinctive chamfered corner.
The building was constructed between 1913 and 1914 as the flagship store for Lord & Taylor and served this purpose for more than a century. A new chapter began in 2023 when it was transformed into an office complex for Amazon.
The building takes its name from the original Lord & Taylor department store that once drew shoppers to Fifth Avenue. Today it remains a landmark that draws people interested in New York's retail heritage and architectural character.
The building is easy to spot on Fifth Avenue and impresses with its clearly visible architecture from street level. Visitors today can view the structure from the outside and admire the Renaissance Revival details of the facade.
Inside the building stands a nine-story thread art sculpture made from materials like jute and brass that honors the textile heritage of the former store. This artistic installation is a surprising detail that many visitors overlook.
