Stavros Niarchos Foundation Library, Public library branch in Midtown Manhattan, United States
The Stavros Niarchos Foundation Library is a neoclassical public library building on Fifth Avenue in Midtown Manhattan, spanning several floors with reading rooms, open book stacks, and computer workstations. The building also has a rooftop terrace that opens onto views of the surrounding city blocks.
The building was constructed in the early 20th century in the Beaux-Arts style and originally served as the main branch of the Midtown branch of the New York Public Library system. A major renovation completed in 2021 gave it its current name following a large donation from the Stavros Niarchos Foundation.
This library serves as a gathering space where people from different backgrounds come to study, work, and connect with one another. Visitors experience it as a community hub where daily activities and programs create a sense of belonging in the heart of the city.
The library sits on Fifth Avenue and is easy to reach by subway from most parts of Manhattan. Entry is free, and the rooftop terrace is worth visiting on a clear day for open views over the surrounding blocks.
The interior features a tall open atrium that connects multiple floors of book stacks, so visitors can look up or down and see books on several levels at once. The 2021 renovation was partly funded by a Greek foundation, making this a rare case of a major European philanthropic gift shaping a New York public space.
