Garden Key Campground

Garden Key Campground sits on a small island in Dry Tortugas National Park with eight basic campsites scattered among trees near the old military fortress. The location provides direct access to coral reefs and allows visitors to observe marine life and seabirds throughout the day.

The campground occupies ground within Fort Jefferson, a 19th-century military fortress built to protect shipping routes in the Gulf of Mexico. The fort later served as a prison before being abandoned and eventually becoming a national historic site.

The campground offers visitors a chance to experience traditional outdoor living while exploring marine habitats through snorkeling and birdwatching in their own time. Staying overnight connects people directly with the island's natural rhythms and wildlife patterns.

Visitors must bring their own water and supplies since the island offers only basic facilities with composting toilets and grilling areas. Access is by boat only, so planning your arrival and departure carefully is essential for a smooth visit.

Once day visitors leave at sunset, overnight campers enjoy the island almost entirely to themselves for the evening. This solitude makes stargazing exceptional and creates moments of deep connection with the natural world that daytime crowds prevent.
