Highland Park Mosque, Islamic center in Highland Park, Michigan, US
The Highland Park Mosque is a mosque in Highland Park, a city within the Detroit metropolitan area in Michigan, built in a traditional Islamic architectural style. The building features elements such as a dome and decorative details typical of early twentieth-century Islamic design, and it sits in a dense residential neighborhood close to a former industrial site.
Mohammed Karoub, an immigrant from Damascus, established this place of worship in 1921 to provide a spiritual home for Muslim workers in a rapidly growing industrial city. It is considered one of the first buildings in the United States built specifically for Islamic worship.
The mosque served as a gathering place for Muslim factory workers who lived and worked in the surrounding neighborhood. It remains an active place of worship today, making the history of this community visible to anyone who visits.
The building sits in a residential area and is easiest to reach on foot from nearby streets. Visiting during daylight hours gives you the best chance to take in the exterior details and, when the space is open, the interior as well.
The architect who designed the building in the early 1920s, Theodore Degenhardt, was not Muslim himself, which was unusual for a project of this kind at the time. The funds to complete the construction came not only from local worshippers but also from donors across the country and from abroad.
