Skeleton Cave is a rock shelter located near Horse Mesa Dam in Maricopa County, Arizona. It sits at the base of a high cliff face and forms a natural opening that extends back into the stone.
The cave is connected to a confrontation in 1872 between the 5th Cavalry and Yavapai people. This event remains central to the site's history.
The cave holds profound meaning for Native American communities as a memorial site connected to the Yavapai War period.
The path to the cave crosses difficult terrain with steep slopes. Visitors should be prepared with proper gear and stamina for the hike.
Human remains were discovered here decades after the initial conflict. The findings were later moved and now rest at another location with continued recognition.
