The Caverns at Natural Bridge, Show cave in Shenandoah Valley, Virginia, US.
The Caverns at Natural Bridge is a cave system that extends about 347 feet below the surface and features large chambers with limestone formations. The complex includes several named rooms, including a dome chamber and an underground lake.
Two brothers named Jake and Joe Fitzgerald discovered these underground chambers in the 1890s on Colonel Henry Chester Parsons' property. The site remained little-known for decades before becoming a commercial attraction in the late 20th century.
The cave is home to specialized wildlife adapted to darkness, including rare insect species found nowhere else in the world. Visitors can observe these adaptations to underground life while walking through the passages.
Visitors can join guided tours through the cave system that last about 45 minutes and show the main chambers and formations. The cave maintains a constant temperature year-round, so plan clothing layers accordingly for your walk.
This cave reaches the greatest depth of any commercial cave system on the eastern coast of North America. The underground waters and specialized fauna make the system a natural laboratory for cave research.
