Statue of Calvin Griffith, Baseball monument at Target Field, Minneapolis, United States.
The Statue of Calvin Griffith was a bronze sculpture that stood at the main entrance of Target Field in Minneapolis, Minnesota. It showed the former Minnesota Twins owner at full height in an upright pose.
The statue was installed in 2010 when Target Field opened, honoring the man who brought the franchise from Washington to Minnesota in 1961. It stood for about a decade before being taken down in 2020.
The statue was taken down in 2020 as public debate about monuments to disputed figures grew across the country. Nothing at the former site now marks Griffith's presence there.
The former site of the statue is right at the main entrance of Target Field and easy to reach on foot. Visitors walking to the ballpark will pass the spot naturally on their way in.
Rod Carew, a Baseball Hall of Famer who played under Griffith, publicly supported the removal even though Griffith had made him one of the highest-paid players of his era. That stance showed how layered the debate around the monument had become.
