Logia Masónica Hijos de la Luz, Masonic temple on Avenida Jose C. Barbosa, Yauco, Puerto Rico.

Description

Logia Masónica Hijos de la Luz is a Neoclassical structure on Avenida Jose C. Barbosa featuring stuccoed walls, prominent columns, and balanced proportions that give it a dignified appearance. The symmetrical facade and formal design reflect its purpose as a meeting place for Masonic assemblies.

History

Built in 1894 by French architect André Troublard and master builder Jesus Emmanuelli, this was the first purpose-built Masonic structure in Puerto Rico. Its construction marked a turning point in how the fraternal movement established permanent institutional spaces on the island.

Culture

The temple remains an active center for Masonic gatherings and community service, with members continuing traditional rituals and charitable work that connect them to the wider town. Visitors can see how the space continues to serve its original purpose as a meeting place for local fraternal life.

Practical

The building sits on a main avenue in town and is easy to locate along Avenida Jose C. Barbosa. Visitors can view the exterior freely, though it remains an active private gathering space, so access to the interior may be limited.

Did you know?

French architect André Troublard also designed the Casa Franceschi Antongiorgi elsewhere in Yauco, meaning these two notable buildings share a creative vision from the same period. Exploring both structures reveals how one designer shaped the town's architectural heritage.
