La Soplaera Waterfall, Natural waterfall in Peñuelas, Puerto Rico
La Soplaera consists of two cascading waterfalls that flow one after another through limestone formations. The water creates multiple pools where visitors can swim at different levels.
The waterfall area reflects the geological formations of Puerto Rico's central mountain range, shaped over millions of years through water erosion. These limestone landscapes formed when strong rivers carved through the island's interior.
The waterfall sits near Peñuelas, where the town plaza displays a sugar cane locomotive and features murals of the Flamboyan, the official town flower. These plant and industrial symbols tell of the region's agricultural past.
Access is via a concrete trail from the main road, with the journey from San Juan taking about two hours by car. Wear comfortable shoes and arrive early, as the path becomes slippery when wet.
The second waterfall creates a natural swimming area surrounded by rock formations, allowing visitors to experience the water from different angles. This distinctive arrangement is found at few other waterfalls in the region.
