Mrs. Seymour H. Knox House, Renaissance Revival mansion in Delaware Avenue Historic District, Buffalo, United States.
The Mrs. Seymour H. Knox House is a large stone mansion with projecting side pavilions and French doors topped by round arches spread across many rooms. The building was later expanded with additional wings to house athletic facilities.
The property was commissioned in 1915 for Grace Millard Knox following her husband Seymour's death and was designed by a prominent New York architect. In the 1960s it was converted and expanded to serve as a sports club with athletic facilities.
The mansion shows how wealthy industrial families displayed their success through grand architecture in early 20th-century Buffalo. The building's scale and design reveal the importance that prominent residents placed on creating impressive family homes.
The building sits in a historic district with other notable homes from the same period, making walks through the area worthwhile. Visitors should allow time to explore the neighboring houses and street architecture as well.
A surprising detail is that the mansion was expanded in the 1960s with a fitness center including a gymnasium and squash courts. This addition shows how the use of grand private residences can change over time.
