Saturn Club, Private members club in Buffalo, United States
The Saturn Club occupies a Tudor Revival building on Delaware Avenue with multiple floors of dining rooms, athletic facilities, and meeting spaces. Inside you will find four bowling lanes, squash courts, separate locker rooms, and exercise equipment alongside modern technology in the meeting areas.
The club was founded in 1885 by thirteen young men seeking an alternative to formal clubs and began meeting on Saturdays. The name Saturn comes from this Saturday gathering tradition that defined the group's early identity.
The membership operates on a college-inspired model where members take on roles such as Faculty, Dean, and Bursar to run the organization. This academic structure shapes how the community manages itself and interacts within the club.
The facility combines athletic and social spaces with modern amenities throughout the building for members to use. Keep in mind this is a private members club, so access is restricted to members and their guests.
During Prohibition, members stored personal alcohol in private lockers within the club. A notable federal raid in 1923 uncovered these hidden bottles, revealing the members' circumvention of the alcohol ban.
