Clarke Memorial Fountain, War memorial fountain at University of Notre Dame, US
Clarke Memorial Fountain is a war memorial at the University of Notre Dame featuring four limestone arches with water flowing into a granite basin. A central sphere fountain forms the heart of the installation.
The memorial was dedicated in 1986 and honors about 500 Notre Dame alumni who died in World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. It marks the lasting importance of these losses in the university's story.
The Latin words 'Pro Patria et Pace' carved on the fourth arch speak to Notre Dame's values of service and peace. These words shape how visitors experience the space as a place for thinking about duty and reconciliation.
The memorial sits on Fieldhouse Mall, west of Hesburgh Library, and works as a central meeting spot for students, faculty, and visitors. The space is easy to reach and open to anyone who wants to stop and reflect.
Each year on Veterans Day, ROTC students keep a continuous watch at the fountain, standing guard at each of the four arches. This tradition connects present and past in a personal way.
