Echo of the Waves

Echo of the Waves is a sculpture made of painted steel and fiberglass with a Teflon coating located near the New England Aquarium. The flowing forms create a visual representation of water movement and integrate the harbor area with artistic expression.

The sculpture was installed outside the New England Aquarium in 1981 and formally dedicated in 1983. It was created during a period when Boston was revitalizing its waterfront spaces for public enjoyment.

The sculpture reflects Boston's deep connection to the sea and brings ocean themes into the urban environment. Its flowing design invites visitors to sense the city's relationship with maritime life.

The sculpture sits right beside the Aquarium along Boston's Harborwalk and is easily accessible on foot. The best way to reach it is by taking the MBTA Blue Line to Aquarium Station or using water taxi services.

The Smithsonian Institution selected the sculpture for its Save Outdoor Sculpture survey program in 1994. This recognition demonstrates its artistic and conservation importance within American art history.
