Dolphins of the Sea is a bronze sculpture at Central Wharf in Boston that depicts multiple dolphins in motion. The work stands approximately 4 feet (1.2 meters) tall and 7 feet (2.1 meters) long near the New England Aquarium.
The work was created in 1977 by American sculptor Katharine Lane Weems and originally stood in a fountain plaza. The sculpture was later moved to its current location near the Boston Harbor Garage.
The sculpture is part of Boston's waterfront art collection and demonstrates how the city uses art to express its relationship with the sea and ocean life. It stands among the works that define the public spaces along the water and show visitors why the coast matters to this city.
The artwork is easily accessible along the Harborwalk, which runs between the parking garage and the New England Aquarium. Visitors can view and photograph it while taking a walk along the water.
The work was documented and cataloged in 1997 through the Smithsonian Institution's Save Outdoor Sculpture program. This recognition highlights its importance in American art history and its value for preserving public artworks.
