New England Aquarium, Public aquarium in Boston, United States
The New England Aquarium is a public marine aquarium on Central Wharf in Boston, United States. The building is organized around a large cylindrical water tank that rises through four floors and is surrounded by a spiral ramp that leads upward.
The aquarium opened in 1969 along the waterfront and quickly became a center for research and education about the sea. Over the following decades the facility expanded its spaces and added new exhibits as well as a center for scientific work.
The tank features living corals and fish from warm waters, fed daily by divers working inside the exhibit. Visitors watch through the glass panels and learn about each species and its behavior while the divers move through the water.
The visit usually starts on the ground floor, where the ramp around the main tank begins its climb upward. Those who arrive early in the morning or on weekdays often find fewer crowds and can view the exhibits more calmly.
A green sea turtle named Myrtle has lived in the large tank for more than 50 years and is the oldest animal in the facility. Divers know her habits well and can often tell visitors where to find her in the tank at any given moment.
