First Landing Party of the Founders of Newark, Marble monument in Newark, United States

The First Landing Party of the Founders of Newark presents two male pilgrims in conversation overlooking a spring on a marble stele measuring 9.5 feet high.

The monument marks the location where Connecticut Puritans established Newark in 1666, with their names engraved on the back of the memorial stone.

Sculptor Gutzon Borglum created this marble work in 1916 as part of four major public art installations throughout Newark, including the Seated Lincoln statue.

The monument stands on a grassy area near the NJPAC/Center Street station of the Newark Light Rail, following multiple relocations throughout its history.

The 13,000-pound marble structure disappeared for over ten years after construction projects in the 1990s before being restored for Newark's 350th anniversary.
