やつしろ全国花火競技大会, National fireworks competition at Kumagawa River, Yatsushiro, Japan.
The national fireworks competition features approximately 14,000 launches in various sizes along the riverside green space of the Kumagawa River. Displays include mid-size shells, large shells, and specialty effects arranged throughout the evening.
This competition began in 1988 and has taken place annually since then. In 2016, organizers held a special edition dedicated to supporting earthquake recovery efforts in the region.
Thirty professional firework companies from across Japan display their technical skills through competitive performances. Each company represents regional pyrotechnic traditions and brings distinctive techniques from their home areas.
The event takes place on the third Saturday of October, running from 6 PM to 8:30 PM each year. Best access is through JR Yatsushiro Station or dedicated shuttle services that run to the venue.
This is the only national-level competition of its kind in Western Japan. Between the competitive segments, organizers present synchronized music displays that fill the breaks with additional entertainment.
