Toyohashi Art Theatre PLAT, Cultural theatre and performance space in Toyohashi, Japan.
Toyohashi Art Theatre PLAT is a performing arts venue in the city of Toyohashi, Aichi Prefecture, with a main hall that seats over 700 people across two levels. The hall has side balconies on both floors and a standing area on the ground level.
PLAT opened in 2013 as a newly built facility for Toyohashi and the wider Aichi region. It was part of a local effort to give the performing arts a permanent home in a city that previously lacked a dedicated venue of this scale.
The name PLAT stands for "PLAce of Theatre", a phrase the venue uses to describe itself as a shared space for performers and audiences alike. During performances, the side balconies on the upper level fill with spectators who watch from angles that are rarely available in other theaters in Japan.
Depending on the type of show, one of the levels may not be open, so checking the seating plan before you arrive helps you find your spot quickly. The side balconies give a different view of the stage, so it is worth choosing your section based on how you prefer to watch a performance.
PLAT runs a residency program that allows theater companies to rehearse and develop work inside the building over an extended period. These resident groups sometimes give open rehearsals or short showings that run alongside the regular program.
