Toyohashi is a large city on the southeastern coast of Aichi Prefecture, between Mikawa Bay and the Pacific Ocean. The cityscape mixes residential areas with port facilities, industrial zones, and scattered green spaces along rivers that empty into the sea.
Archaeological finds indicate settlement since the Paleolithic period. Yoshida Castle was built in the 15th century and gave the town its earlier name, which remained in use until several municipalities merged in the 20th century.
The name derives from Yoshida, a former castle town that later expanded into its present form. Visitors today see the reconstructed castle and its grounds, used by locals for walks and events.
Shinkansen trains stop here on the Tokaido Line, connecting the city with Tokyo and Osaka. Most points of interest lie scattered, so using local trains or buses helps reach different neighborhoods.
The Kamo Iris Garden displays over 300 varieties of these flowers during the late spring bloom period. Locals come here in the evenings to view the colored blooms under soft lighting.
