Yoshida Castle, Japanese castle in Toyohashi, Japan
Yoshida Castle is a Japanese fortress in Toyohashi that sits on elevated ground above the city. The reconstructed three-story Kurogane Turret stands among the old stone walls and offers views over the surrounding streets and buildings.
Makino Koshiro established the fortress in 1505 during a time when many rulers fought for power. Over the following centuries, ownership changed hands several times until it became the center of a feudal domain.
The stone walls carry engraved marks and inscriptions that show who took part in building the defenses. These carvings come from feudal lords and their retainers who worked on raising the fortifications.
The grounds and the Kurogane Turret are open Tuesday through Sunday from 10 AM to 3 PM with no admission charge. The paths are mostly level, though some sections along the walls slope gently upward.
The site carried the name Imamihashi in its early years before receiving its present designation in the 1520s. This renaming marked a shift in the role and function of the fortification within the region.
