Prekonoška Cave

Prekonoška Cave, Protected cave near Prekonoga, Serbia.

Prekonoška Cave is a protected limestone cave in Serbia with formations extending through multiple chambers underground. The walls display white, yellow, and red stalactite patterns, and the system includes an underground lake where mineral-based formations resemble unusual shapes.

The cave was first explored in 1866 by Dr. Stevan Mačaj and later recognized by King Milan Obrenović as a show cave. This royal status in the late 1800s brought attention and established it as a destination for visitors.

The cave holds evidence of human settlement from the Stone Age, discovered through archaeological work inside. Visitors can observe traces of how ancient people once used this natural shelter.

Bring your own lighting equipment and wear sturdy footwear, as the paths inside are uneven and can be slippery. Take your time moving through the chambers, especially in lower sections where space becomes tight.

The cave contains stalactite formations that resemble coral structures, a rare occurrence in limestone caves. These unusual mineral patterns developed through specific water circulation over thousands of years.
