Old Hillsborough County Courthouse, Historic courthouse in downtown Tampa, United States
The Old Hillsborough County Courthouse was a red brick building with a silver dome located at the intersection of Franklin Street and Lafayette Place in downtown Tampa. It housed multiple judicial offices and served the growing population of Hillsborough County throughout its operational years.
The building was constructed in 1892 to replace an earlier courthouse that no longer met the expanding needs of Hillsborough County's judicial system. It remained the center of judicial operations until its demolition in 1953.
The courthouse displayed Moorish architectural elements and stained glass windows that reflected design influences from the nearby Tampa Bay Hotel. These features gave the building a distinctive appearance that connected it to the exotic aesthetic developing across the city.
The site occupied a central location in downtown Tampa at a prominent intersection that was easy to navigate. The area today offers a sense of where this important judicial hub once stood in the city's core.
Judge Leo Stalnaker rescued several stained glass windows and Moorish ornaments from the main courtroom before the building was demolished. These carefully preserved elements reflect how individuals worked to save pieces of the building's distinctive architectural heritage.
