National Covid Memorial Wall, Covid memorial on Thames South Bank, United Kingdom
The National Covid Memorial Wall is a commemorative site on the south bank of the Thames in London. The heart shapes in different shades of red cover a long retaining wall that runs along the footpath between two bridges.
The project began in spring 2021 when bereaved families wanted to create a space for mourning and remembrance. Later, the local authority agreed to maintain the wall as a permanent memorial.
Every week, people come to paint new hearts or add the names of those they lost. The wall transforms gradually through fresh paint and personal messages that visitors leave at the edges of the hearts.
The memorial sits on a public footpath and remains freely accessible at all times. Visitors who wish to view the full wall should allow some time, as it stretches for several hundred meters.
Many hearts carry handwritten names or short dedications that volunteers add with fine brushes. The wall itself belongs not to the city but is maintained and cared for by a group of dedicated citizens.
