Ōmeguri-Komeguri Mountain Castle

Ōmeguri-Komeguri Mountain Castle, Korean-style fortress in Kusakabe, Higashi-ku, Japan.

Ōmeguri-Komeguri Mountain Castle sits on two mountain peaks in Kusakabe in Higashi Ward and is a defensive complex spread across the terrain. The fortifications make use of granite stones and earthen embankments positioned along the ridge and valleys of the site.

This castle was built in the 7th century during the Asuka period as Japan worked to strengthen its defenses across the country. It was one of many fortifications constructed after regional conflicts made protection a priority.

The layout reflects influences from builders who came from the Baekje kingdom. You can see how granite stones and earth embankments were arranged here following defensive traditions that were used in Korea at that time.

The site is reachable by train to a nearby station, but you will need to hike to explore the ruins. Wear sturdy shoes and be ready for uneven ground, as the remains spread across ridges and valleys.

The complex includes three water gates positioned where walls meet valleys, used to control water flow through the defenses. One peak may have once held a fire beacon that sent signals to other fortified sites across the region.
