Kameyama Castle, Japanese castle in Kameoka, Japan

The castle occupies a strategic position in the Kameoka Basin, featuring stone walls, moats, and multiple defensive structures across different elevation levels.

Constructed in 1578 by Akechi Mitsuhide under Oda Nobunaga's orders, the castle served as a control point for the Tanba region until the Meiji period.

The castle grounds now house the headquarters of Oomoto, a religious organization that acquired the property in 1919 and rebuilt it after World War II.

Visitors can access the castle remains by walking 10 minutes south from JR Kameoka Station and must obtain permission at the entrance reception desk.

The original five-story tower was demolished using 1,500 dynamite charges in 1936, and its stones were deliberately discarded in the Sea of Japan.
