Fontanka Embankment 20 - Golitsyn Mansion, Classical mansion on Fontanka Embankment, Saint Petersburg, Russia.

The Golitsyn Mansion on Fontanka Embankment is a symmetrically designed granite building with neoclassical elements across its river-facing facade. The proportional details of the exterior showcase the craftsmanship of that period.

The building was constructed between 1787 and 1790 by architect Fyodor Demertzov and has shaped the embankment's appearance ever since. Following its completion, it became the residence of the noble Golitsyn family, who occupied it during the early 1800s.

The facade displays the strict classical lines that were typical of St. Petersburg's nobility during the 19th century. You can still see how this architectural language expressed the power and taste of the elite of that time.

The mansion sits directly on the Fontanka, easily reached on foot while walking along the river. The surrounding area contains many other historic buildings, making it ideal for a longer walking tour.

The use of granite as the primary building material was still uncommon in Saint Petersburg at the time of construction. This choice made the house exceptionally durable and gave it a distinguished appearance that stands apart from the city's typical brick buildings.
