Elfdalensky vase in Summer Garden, Garden vase in Summer Garden, Saint Petersburg, Russia
The Elfdalensky vase is a porphyry ornament located near Karpiev Pond in the Summer Garden. It displays the decorative traditions of 19th-century garden design and complements the classical composition of walkways and planted areas throughout the park.
A sculptor designed this porphyry vase in 1839 using a precious and difficult-to-carve material. It became a permanent addition to the garden and was later officially recognized as a protected cultural object.
The Russian government designated this decorative element as a federal cultural heritage site through resolution No. 527 on July 10, 2001.
The vase sits along the main pathways of the garden in an easily accessible location. You can find it during a regular walk through the park without difficulty or special directions.
The vase is carved from porphyry, a red stone valued since ancient times for its rarity and beauty. Creating such an object required specialized artisans and complex techniques that make it a less common garden decoration.
