First Engineer Bridge, Stone bridge in central Saint Petersburg, Russia

The First Engineer Bridge is a stone arch structure spanning the Winter Canal and connecting Millionnaya Street near the Winter Palace complex. The structure measures approximately 19 meters in length and 21 meters in width, with step descents providing access to the canal embankment.

This structure was built in 1768 at a different location but was relocated and reconstructed at its current position over the Winter Canal in 1784. The relocation reflects urban development decisions and the need to adapt infrastructure around the Winter Palace complex.

The bridge displays granite facades and solid parapets that represent how people in 18th-century Saint Petersburg designed their structures. These decorative elements shape the visual character of the area and offer insight into classical architectural tastes of the era.

The structure offers good accessibility through the available steps that lead directly to the canal embankments. Visitors should note that the walkways around the bridge are narrow and pedestrian traffic can be heavy, especially during peak season.

The structure still retains stone-carved details from its original 18th-century construction, even though it underwent substantial repairs in the 1950s. This preservation of historical details despite major renovation work makes it a rare example of restoration practices from the Soviet period.
