Julian Column, Roman archaeological column in Ulus district, Ankara, Turkey
The Julian Column rises 15 meters high with fluted rings on its shaft and features a Corinthian capital adorned with acanthus leaf reliefs.
Emperor Julian's visit to Ankara in 362 CE during his Persian campaign led to the construction of this commemorative limestone column.
The column incorporates both Roman architectural elements and local Anatolian craftsmanship, representing the integration of imperial and regional traditions.
Located in Government Square since 1934, the column underwent restoration in 2001 and stands on an andesite platform near central transportation hubs.
For many decades, storks built nests at the top of the column, making it a distinctive landmark captured in numerous photographs and postcards.
