Victory Monument, Bronze monument in Ulus Square, Ankara, Turkey
The Victory Monument is a bronze sculpture in Ulus Square at the heart of Ankara, featuring a mounted figure accompanied by two other people. One companion carries a cannonball, while the other stands in an observing position.
The monument was completed in 1927 following an international competition won by German sculptor Heinrich Krippel. A nationwide fundraising campaign organized by journalist Yunus Nadi made the project possible.
The monument brings together military and civilian figures in bronze, showing how different parts of society came together during a defining moment. Their poses and gestures communicate shared purpose and determination.
The monument sits east of Atatürk Boulevard on a central plaza and is easy for visitors to reach. It was restored in 2002 and receives regular maintenance since then.
A notable aspect is the choice of bronze as material, which emphasizes permanence and the weight of the moment being depicted. The metal catches light differently throughout the day, creating a living presence in the square.
