Domaine d'Emeraude, Botanical garden and tourist attraction in Le Morne-Rouge, Martinique.
The Domaine d'Emeraude is a botanical garden sprawling across roughly 25 hectares with marked trails winding through rainforest. The site features extensive collections of Caribbean plant species organized into different sections that each focus on specific aspects of local flora.
The estate was originally called Domaine d'Estripault and functioned as an agricultural plantation. It was later transformed into a nature preservation site and opened to visitors only in 2011 under its current name.
The Garden of Origins displays plants and spices that have shaped Caribbean cooking and healing practices for generations. Walking through this section reveals how these species arrived on the islands and continue to matter in daily life.
The grounds offer several trail options of varying length depending on how much time and energy you want to spend. It is recommended to wear sturdy shoes and bring plenty of water, since the paths lead through humid and forested areas.
The site houses an Exploration Pavilion with interactive exhibits about local fauna, flora, and the region's volcanic activity. From this pavilion, you can also see Montagne Pelée volcano, offering a direct view of the island's volcanic story.
