Billy The Kid Museum

Billy The Kid Museum is a frontier history museum in Fort Sumner housing over 60,000 objects from the American West era. The collection includes vintage furniture, historical vehicles, animal remains, and personal items that document life in the region during that period.

The building was established in 1952 and initially focused on the general history of Fort Sumner. Later, the focus shifted to its connection with the outlaw Billy the Kid, whose story shaped regional history and drew wider attention.

The exhibits reveal how people in New Mexico lived during the 1800s and early 1900s, showing the tools they used and the challenges they faced each day. The collections reflect daily life at the frontier and the connections between different communities in the region.

The museum sits along Highway 60/84 on East Sumner Avenue and is easily accessible from the main road. A gift shop inside offers educational materials and Western-themed items, making it convenient to find resources related to your visit.

The collection holds Billy the Kid's Winchester rifle and the actual door from the room where he died, still marked with bullet holes. These objects connect visitors directly to the dramatic events of that era in a tangible way.
