Portail de la manufacture nationale d'armes

The Portail de la manufacture nationale d'armes is a stone gateway marking the entrance to the former state arms factory in Saint-Étienne, combining classical architectural details with military design elements. It leads to exhibition spaces and design facilities within converted manufacturing buildings that now form part of the Cité du Design.

The gateway was constructed between 1864 and 1868 under Captain Bouchaud's direction as part of expanding arms production in Saint-Étienne. The factory subsequently became one of France's largest military manufacturing centers and shaped the city's industrial character for generations.

The gateway now represents a visual bridge between industrial production and contemporary design practice on this site. It shows how a place dedicated to weapons manufacturing has transformed into a center for creative work.
