Playa Cosón, Sand beach in Las Terrenas, Dominican Republic.
Playa Cosón is a sand beach near Las Terrenas on the Atlantic coast, stretching for several kilometers with fine golden sand. Dense palm trees line the shore, and the water displays clear turquoise tones.
This was once a small fishing village that began developing into a tourist destination from the 1980s onward after road improvements connected the area better. These infrastructure changes brought more visitors and shifted the local economy.
Local fishermen work along this shoreline, and their daily catches supply the restaurants that line the beach.
This beach sits about 8 kilometers from Las Terrenas town center and is easy to reach by car or motorcycle. The waves tend to be strong, attracting surfers, but swimmers should exercise caution in rough areas.
At the eastern end, the Río Cosón meets the ocean and creates natural pools and shallow basins visible when exploring the shore. This river mouth zone offers a calmer area that contrasts with the wave-filled western section.
